Gatherings Held in Town and Country. BIRTHDAY PARTY AT PAPANUI. At the Nortlieote Hall, a party was tendered to Mrs F. Matthews, Godley Avenue, Northcote. by her friends to celebrate her twenty-first birthday. Dancing and games were enjoyed. The music was supplied by Miss Jean Harding, and extras were played by Mrs Pahi and Mr B. Lange. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss A. Fielding and Mr E. Fielding, and competitions were won by Mrs Wright and Miss J. Harding. A large birthday cake held pride of place on the daintily decorated* supper table. Misses I. Davis, A. Ansley and S'. Sandman. Barrington Croquet Club. A pleasant afternoon was given by Mrs Al’Gimpsey at Ballantyne's tea rooms to members of the Barrington Croquet Club. Those present were: — Mesdames M’Gimpsey, Wootton, Clark. Cooke. Memmott. Gilmore, Giddens, White and Piper and Miss Maze. An enjoyable afternoon was given by Mesdames • Clark and Memmott atr Spreydon, in aid of the Barrington Croquet Club. Competitions were won by Mesdames Griffiths, Cooke and Malony and Miss Maze. Social Evening. An enjoyable social evening, organised by the Refreshment Committee to obtain funds for their tea rooms at the Grand National bazaar, was held in the parish hall, Addington. .on Thursday evening. The ladies responsible for the success of the evening were:—Mesdames H. M’Keown (convener), H. Cody re, S. Price, G. M’Kendry, W. Aitken, A. O’Leary. C. Walsh. White, K. Sepie, P. Consedine, Brosnahan and F. M’Donough and Miss B. M. Sloan (honorary secretary). Music for cJancing was provided by Miss D. Moore’s band. A lucky spot dance was won by Miss K. Macdonald and Air T. Alacdonald. 500 Party. The fortnightly 500 party in aid of the Alayor's Relief of Distress Fund was held by Mrs Roberts at her home in Meredith Street recently. Prizes were won by Mesdames Barrett, Moyle and Phillips and a competition for a baby’s crocheted coat was won by Mrs Parisne. Those present included:—Mesdames Roberts, Parlane. A delightful afternoon was spent at Addington recently, when Airs E. Roberts was entertained at a party by the members of her 500 Club as a mark of their appreciation of her work for the relief of distress. Airs •Parla > ne was hostess on this occasion, and on behalf of the club presented the guest of honour with a beautiful bouquet of freesias, and also handed her a substantial sum

to assist her in her work for the poor and needy. The afternoon was spent in cards and competitions. Prizes were won by Alesdames Hartigan, Griffiths, R. Alacfarlane and J. Cook. The Anglican Young Alen’s Bible Class, Papanui, held a dance on Monday evening last'in St Paul’s Sunday School. The hall was decorated with red. white and blue streamers. Air B. Euchre prizes were won by Airs Cummings and Air B. Watson. Consolation prizes were awarded to Airs F. Blakemore and Mr T. Jeal. Novelty dances were won by Aluss Walter and Mr Voice (lucky spot). The monthly meeting of the Ladies’ Guild of the Spreydon Presbyterian Church was held in the Church Hall on Thursday afternoon, when the Afethodist Ladies’ Guild were entertained to a social afternoon. There were about fifty members present, and a pleasant time was spent. A musical programme arranged by Airs C. Alatheson was contributed to by Alesdames Down and Alatheson, Holmes, Woodcock and Bowden. Airs Al’Kay, of St Paul’s Church, gave an interesting address. Airs Al’Kenzie, president of the guild, presided. Plunket Funds Aided. Last evening, in the Druids’ Hall, Woolston, a successful flag 500 party was held in aid ot the Wool«ton-Lin-wood sub-branch of the Plunket Society. The commitee’s thanks are due to Air * PL S. Parish, who ably conducted the iplay. Prizes were won by Air and Airs Campbell and Mrs Yule.
