“AN UGLY WORD”

Objection to Suggested Boycott. SIGN CAUSES PROTEST. (Special to the “ Star.”) DUNEDIN, July 20. Chalked up in big letters on the frontage of a Dunedin manufacturing concern in a busy street is the sign “ Boycott British Imports; Support Local Industry.” The sign was written soon after the tariff revisions were announced and has caused not a little adverse comment from passers-by. The sign itself is not offensive, but the wording has offended many citizens. “ A deputation of manufacturers should be formed to wait on the firm and ask it to erase this sign,” said a business man. “ The acknowledged slogan of all good New Zealanders is buy New Zealand first; buy British second and buy Empire next. Boycott is an ugly and portentous word to be used in business.

“This firm might not be pleased with the report of the Tariff Commission, but in asking for a boycott of all British imports it is alienating sympathy. It forgets that New Zealand has been built up on English money handled by people of British stock. Britain is really our only customer. The sign offends all patriotic New Zealanders.”
