GIFT FROM NELSON.

Lord Rutherford Receives Case of Apples. SCIENTIST’S TRIBUTES. United Press Assn.—By .Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received July 20, 9.45 p.m.) LONDON, July 19. There was a pleasant ceremony at the New Zealand Office, when Sir James Parr, in the presence of a number of leading New Zealanders, on behalf of the Nelson fruitgrowers, presented the season’s one millionth case of apples shipped from Nelson to Lord Rutherford, whom he described as Nelson’s most distinguished son. Lord Rutherford, in acknowledging the gift, described the early struggles of Nelson fruitgrowers against soil troubles and insect pests, and paid a warm tribute to the Cawthron Institute and Professor Easterfield, whose efforts had resulted in Nelson growing the finest apples. This was a splendid example of the good effects of applying science to agriculture.

Lord RtTtherford is sending the lid of the millionth case of apples to a Nelson boy, who forwarded 5s and asked for part of the case.
