WORKING MEN’S CLUB.
Fifty-fourth Annual “ Swarry.” More than three hundred people attended the fifty-fourth annual “ Sam Weller Swarry ” of the Christchurch Working Men’s Club in the Caledonian Hall last evening. The president of the club, Mr J. L. Ashworth, presided, and among those with him on the dais were the Deputy-May*or (Mr J. K. Archer), the Town Clerk (Mr J. S. Neville) and representatives of kindred clubs. The principal toast of the evening.
“ The Club and Its Founders,” was proposed by one of the club trustees, Mr J. P. Oakes, who referred to the outstanding qualities of the founders. Mr Oakes’ co-trustee, Mr J. E. Petherick. replied to the toast. The toast of “ The Mayor and Councillors ” was proposed by Mr Ashworth, who spoke of Mr D. G. Sullivan’s ability in his office and his efforts to improve the lot of the worker. He was ably supported, Mr Ashworth said, by the Deputy-Mayor. In the absence of Mr Sullivan, Mr Archer replied to thie toast. He thanked Mr Ashworth for his references, and praised Mr Sullivan’s efforts. Other toasts honoured were:—“The Management Committee,” proposed by Mr J. E. Cooper and replied to by Mr Ashworth; “ Kindred Clubs and Visitors,” proposed by the vice-presi-dent (Mr W. Crossen) and responded to by visiftng presidents and visitors: “ The Entertainers,” proposed by* Mr J. E. Malzard, and responded to by Messrs C. James and P. Cole. A varied and enjoy*able programme, arranged by the entertainment com-
mittee of the club, \£as given, the items including orchestral selections, songs, recitations, card tricks, a cornet duet, and humorous numbers.
