DOMINATIONS for the Christchurch Hunt Club’s race meeting at Riccarton on August 4i close at the C.J.C. offices at 8 p.m. on Friday. * * * *

Nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s classic events close at 5 p.m. on Friday. These races are the M'Lean Stakes of 1934. Champagne Stakes arid,Guineas of 1935. * * * * Weights for the New Zealand Grand National Hurdle race and Steeplechase, also for the Winter Cup, are due on Tuesday. General entries for the C.J.C. meeting close on July 27. * * * * The Hawke's Bay Hunt Club will use the single pool system with dividends on a 75-25 basis at its race meeting at Hastings on Saturday. NOT TO RUN. Protomint appeared in the acceptances for the President’s Handicap and the Paerata Handicap to be run at the Franklin meeting on Saturday. He was, however. withdrawn from both events at 8.45 p.m. the same night. FAILED TO FIND BUYER, The Limond gelding Ruanui. who recently joined the team of W. D. Young at Hastings, was put up for auction there last week but failed to reach the reserve. Ruanui is engaged at the Hunt meeting at Hastings on Saturday. DERBY ITEMS. Few were so happy over the result of the Derby as the residents of Old Windsor, where the Maharajah of Rajpipla has his riverside residence. The happiest of them all were the thirty employees of the Maharajah and their friends, for whom he had chartered a special motoi-coach so that they might see his horse win. Brokers who effected the original insurance policy on Windsor Lad were instructed a day or two before the Derby to increase the policy to £40,000 in the event of the horse winning. Thus had Windsor Lad died before the race he would have been worth £IO,OOO. while immediately afterward his value at death became £40,000. MATE FOR DIATOMOUS. In purchasing the five-year-old gelding Argument during the course of last week’s Wellington meeting. Mr M. Millar was finding a companion for Diatomous, and it is probable that the gelding will leave for Sydney at an early date. It was on this account that Argument was finally withdrawn from his engagement on Saturday. TRENTIIAM’S WEAKNESS. Yitaphone £2O, Gladium £2O and Pahu £IOO were the only Trenthamtrained horses to get any money at the Wellington winter meeting. It is many years since Trenthajji stables have been so weak. TROPHY FOR TRAINER. A stopwatch valued at £lO has been donated by Mr E. T.' Morrison, of Pukekohe. for the trainer of the winner of the Franklin Steeplechase at Pukekohe next Saturday. The winning rider will receive a whip donated by Messrs Wilkinson and Campbell. WATER POWER’S SISTER A sister to Water Power has been placed in the charge of the Invercargill trainer, T. E. Pankhurst, to be qualified for the Birchwood Jlunt. She was bred by Mr L. C Hazlett and will race in the interests of Mr W. E. Hazlett, owner of Andy and Cultivator. THU RINA’S WEIGHT. For the Dromore Steeplechase, run at Ashburton on June 23, Thurina was allotted 12.6. He did not start. The race was won by Membo from Punchestown and French Fleet. All of these horses are engaged in the South Canterbury* Steeplechase and ah interesting comparison obtainable from the two races is:—

* Non-starter at Ashburton. Umtali, a week before the Ashburton meeting, won the Pareora Steeplechase at Washdyke with 9.1, Punchestown 10.7. Barrington 9 7 and French Fleet 9.0 failing to complete the course. At Trentham last week, Thurina, having his first race for eleven months, made a great effort to win the Wellington Steeplechase., Membo failed decisively at Trentham, where Umtali gained two thirds in hack steeplechases. Cultivator being fourth in one of them. In the Wellington Steeplechase. Thurina was conceding Membo only 71b. At Ashburton on June 23 he was asked to give Membo 341 b. Now there is only 231 b between them. SKY ROVER RESUMES T. H. Gillett has taken Sky Rover in hand again. This three-year-old brother to Red Heckle has shown promise in some of his races, but he has not been easy* to train. He has been added to the list since he last appeared in public. * * * * The Wellington sportsman, Mr J. J. M’Grath, has acquired a property at iYaikanae, with the idea of establishing a stud. lie has-leased from Mr A. 5 Higgs, with right of purchase, the son-in-Law horse, Philamor, who will 5c sent north soon to do stud duty at iris new home in the spring.

/D y Vorss AND NEWS FROM FVFRYWHFRC

OVER HURDLES AXD OX FLAT. In the Iladlow Hack and Hunters’ Hurdle race at Washdyke on Saturday* week. Father O’Flynn 9.5 is asked to concede Eaton Hall lib and Gallivanter and Prince Tractor 31b each. In the Hunters’ Plate, to be run later in the day, Eaton Hall 11.11 has to give Father O’Flynn 71b, Prince Tractor 111 b, and Gallivanter 121 b. FORM OF VALPEEN. Valpeen, first of the visiting horses to reach Riccarton for the Grand National meeting, was rather disappointing at Trentham last week, when he seemed to tire in both of his races. He w*as beaten five furlongs from home in the Wellington Steeplechase in which he finished fourth with 10.4 to Billy* Boy 11.5, Thurina 10.4 and Riotous 10.11. In the July Steeplechase he was second with 10.4 to Riotous 11.0. Possibly* the going at Trentham troubled him for his form at Ellerslie in June' was good. He won the Great Northern Steeplechase with 9.4 from Ilauwai 9.0 and Copey 9.7, and was second with 10.3 to Patutahi 9.2 in the Winter Steeplechase in which Billy Boy* 11.7 was third.

CLAREMONT WEIGHTS. When Water Power won the Claremont Handicap at Washdyke in July, 1932, she carried 8.9. She was again successful m this event a year ago, carrying 8.8, while Grecian Prince was unplaced with 8.8. * Now she has 9.7 and Grecian Prince 7.9. When Palermo won the Stewards’ Handicap, six furlongs, on the first day* at Trentham, he* carried 7.13, while the unplaced division included Water Power 8.8 and Hula Belle 7.10. Water Power subsequently* ran a second and a first. In the Claremont, Palermo has been raised 151 b, Water Power 131 b and Hula Belle 51b. When Water Power beat Guarantee by three lengths in the Onslow Handicap, six furlongs, she had 5.9, but an apprentice allowance reduced her weight to 8 1 Guarantee had 7.9 ana Palermo was unplaced with 8.9. Water Power 97, Guarantee 8.3 and Palermo 9.0 are the Claremont impests. YOUNG TRAINER S TRIUMPH. Marcus Marsh, who trains Windsor Lad. the winner of the English Derby*, is thirty years of age, and this is the first season that he has beyi a public trainer. Previously* he had been associated with Captain Gooch, whom he assisted to carry* on after he became an invalid as the result of an accident in the hunting field. No one, we may be sure (says the “Daily* Mail”), was more pleased by the success of Windsor Lad than the King, because the young trainer is the son of the late Richard Marsh, who trained for his Majesty and for King Edward. Mr Marsh won the Derby for King Edward three times—Persimmon, Diamond Jubilee and Minoru. Racing people believe in the general virtue ot heredity*, and both Windsor Lad and his trainer are worthy examples of this influence. Marsh is the nephew on his mother’s side of Fred Darling, who has won four Derbies, and was second this year with Lord Woolavington’s Easton. RACING FIXTURES. July 21—Hawke’s Bay H.C.
