NEW BRIGHTON VALUES.
Dispute in Assessment Court. The value of New Brighton property was the subject of a discussion at a sitting of the Assesment Court in Christchurch to-day. Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., presided, and associated with him were Mr W. Cunningham, Government 'assessor, and Mr A. J. White, representing the New Brighton Borl ough Council. .Mr R. J. Watson appeared for the Valuation Department. Thirty-seven valuations were contested and 111 properties were offered to the Government for sale at the Government valuation. Several of those who gave evidence stated that in their opinion most of the valuations were too high. The Ratepayers’ Advisory Co-op., Ltd., had the largest number of objections. The number of disputed valuations was seven, and 80 sections were offered to the Government at the valuations placed on them. During the examination of one witness, Mr Watson referred to “land” at New Brighton. Opposing counsel objected to the term land, and asked witness if land at New Brighton consisted of sand. ( es,” witness replied. J- a £Tce with you,” said counsel. It’s all sand and nothing but sand.” Giving evidence in support of reducing the value of se\-eral properties, M r T. Lees, land broker, maintained that values in New Brighton had gone back to where they were twentj'five years ago. Mr Hewitt asked for specific information as to the. number of actual sales which had taken place during the last eighteen months, as well as where the properties were situated., and their values. Mr Watson said the Court would be supplied with the information. The Court adjourned in order to inspect certain properties at New Brighton.
