A GOOD RULE. Drivers Must Explain Poor Finishes. A trotting rule that should be popular here is that which obtains in New South Wales relating to the rejection of entries for one month if the drivers concerned cannot explain why their horses did not finish within the distance post in their races. It makes the drivers wake up to the fact that sudden reversals of form can be counteracted in more ways than one, says the “ Sydney Sportsman.” At the last two meetings at Harold Park, Sydney, no fewer than twentyseven horses have been ordered to stand down on account of this rule. Their drivers may be hot under the collar, but they cannot get away from the fact that each and every one of them has been given the chance of explaining the why and the wherefore, and, in the opinion of the officials, they have not done so. Standing down a horse does not infer that the horse was a non-trier. The animal may have been genuinely backed, and probably was going for its life, but repeated breakings during the race may have put it right out of the count, and it haS finished at the rear of the field. Romney Lass was a case in point at a recent meeting. After hearing evidence in her case, however, and being satisfied that she almost crippled herself, the stewards removed the ban on her. The secretary, Mr Frank Howell, wasn’t notified until several days later.
Unreliable horses should be penalised. They do more harm to the sport than anything else. It is galling to the public to see a horse win in good style one day and at the next meeting finish down the course. Furthermore, until officials exercise their powers reversals of form were as common as the housefly. What do we see now? Horses are commencing to run up to their right form and the racegoer is more satisfied. He knows officials are doing their utmost to look after his interests.
MUSKET BLOOD. The Carbine Influence on the Derby. Writing on the subject of Derby winners whose sons have won the “ Blue Riband,” “Ithuriel ” in London “ Sporting Life ” says: “ It is remarkable that in the last thirty years, apart from Orby and Grand Parade, we are indebted to blood re-imported from Australia in order to found a fresh line of continuous Derby winners and sons who won the Derby. “ Musket was a rather gaunt horse, but a great stayer. lie defeated pointless Derby winners like Blue Gown and Favonius. as well as Albert Victor, second at Epsom. “ During the five years Musket, was at the stud in New Zealand, fortunately' for Colonial breeding, he sired that remarkably good horse and fine stayer Carbine, whose record in winning the Melbourne Cup (two miles) under lOst 51b will stand for all time. “ Carbine was purchased and brought to England by the Duke of Portland in 1596. liis Grace, however, did not breed Spearmint. “It was Sir James Duke who sent Maid of the Mist to Carbine. He afterwards sold the mare to the Sledmere Stud, so it was among the yearlings from that famous stud that Spearmint was offered for sale at Doncaster, to be secured by the late Major E. Loder with a bid of 300 guineas. “It is a familiar story how Spearmint replaced the broken-down Flair, and after his Derby triumph went to Paris to capture the Grand Prix. “ Spion Kop came when Spearmint was fourteen years old. When Spion Kop was only seven, he got Felstead. The latter this season is having his first three-year-olds running for him, so there is plenty of time for him to follow in the steps of his ancestors.” RACIXG FIXTURES. July 21—Hawke’s Bav lI.C.
