“TIME TO STOP.”

Wage-Cutting Deprecated by Speaker. “ The time has come when a halt must be called to the wage-cutting which is crippling New Zealand today,” said Mr J. Roberts, an employees’ assessor, at a dispute between the employers and the Canterbury Drivers’ and Related Trades Industrial Union of Workers, which was heard in the Conciliation Council to-day. “ One of the worst things done in this district is that the men have accepted your cuts,” said Mr Roberts. “ Wellington did not. The men here submitted to your dictation and all you want to do is cut them more.” Mr D. I. Macdonald: We are offering you a 4 per cent increase on what the men have been receiving during the past eighteen months. Mr Roberts: It does not pay the workers in any part of New Zealand not to fight. To put it bluntly, the more thev submit the more they will be kicked. This remark was greeted by cries of “ Over the fence ” and “ nonsense.”
