DATES DISCUSSED.
Timaru Wool Sales. (Special to the “ Star.”) TIMARU. July 16. A conference- representative of commercial farming and labour organisations, convened by the Crown Tenants’ Association, was held to-day to discuss the wool sale dates allotted to Timaru for next season. Mr D. C. Kidd presided. The chairman urged the conference to fight centralisation tooth and nail, this view being endorsed by one or two subsequent speakers. Mr A. Anderson, chairman of the Wool Brokers’ Association said there were difficulties in the way of getting a January sale, and it was practically impossible to get a sale earlier than January 25 during the coming season. "Let us support the policy of Timaru wool sales for South Canterbury growers and we will find that this centralisation bogey will not crop up again.” Mr B. E. H. Tripp said that if the December sale followed Dunedin instead of preceding it, there was no reason why thev should not get another 4000 or 5000 bales. lie did not think there was anything in the bogey of shipping to Christchurch or Dunedin. It was decided to agree to two South Canterbury sales for the coming season, providing no limit was made to the offering. "Does it pay farmers to have sales here?” asked Mr G. Murray. . "I say not. I am against centralisation, but I doubt whether the smaller sales will pay in the end.” It was finally decided that the Woolbuyers’ Association be asked to endeavour to have the first sale between December 22 and the first week in January and the second sale not later J than March 15.
