In the open golf championship James Adams and Percy Alliss, with 67. beat the course record at Deal. Scores of 152, or better, qualify for the champions* ip proper. One hundred and two players quali- I fied. Gadd’s aggregate was five fewer than i any previous qualifying rounds. The critics emphasise the gratifying j display which British golfers are re- I vealing in stroke saving on the greens.; Adams, aged twenty-three, the Irish ; champion, putted wonderfully, going r out in 32 and home in 35. All the Americans qualified. Kirkwood strained a shoulder. lie I might haye had an excellent score, but ; took 20 for the last four holes. lie made j a magnificent shot at the fifth, where ■ the ball was lying on the down-slope of the bunker. Kirkwood took a lefthanded No. 2 iron, hit the ball to the green 190 yards away, and got a par four. In the second round the aggregates include the following: At Deal.
