“TOO MODERN.”
Debutantes Must Observe . Court Rules. LOXD.ON, June 16. The official intimation that the dress rules for the first Court of the season could have been more liberally interpreted has, apparently resulted in breaches of the regulations. Accordingly, all debutantes who are to be presented at Court have been told that the regulations must be strictly observed. The “ Evening News ” understands that some of the dresses displeased the King and Queen, because Court rules were not observed. They drew the attention of the Lord Chamberlain (the Earl of Cromer) to the matter. The dresses that caused displeasure were very modern, exceptionally low in the backhand high in the front. Others attempted colour schemes, contrary to the approved style. The debutantes also contravened the rules for train lengths. They wore the Prince of Wales feathers at all angles, instead of upright. Such infringements are inexcusable, because four officially approved Court gowns are kept at the Lord Chamberlain’s office for guidance.
