“MADAME SPY.”

Realistic War Picture at Majestic. Excitement is the keynote of “ Madame Spy. the thrilling drama featuring Fay Wray and Nils Asther, which began its Christchurch season at the Majestic Theatre yesterday. The opening scene is most spectacular, showing two aeroplanes engaged in action during the Great War. Nils Asther, who appears as an Austrian officer, crashes in Russian territory. lie is badly wounded, and is nursed back to health by Fay Wray, who is known as “ B-24 ’ in the Russian Secret Service. They marry, Asther little knowing his wife’s true occupation, and return to Vienna. Secret plans go astray, and the Austrian Secret Service combs the city in search of the mysterious “ B-24.” She is discovered, but disappears, and the action quickens until a Sensational finale is reached. The war scenes at the front and in Warsaw and Vienna are the last word in realism, while the many and varied tricks of the rival spies hold the interest of the audience. The whole show bears the stamp of clever photography and direction. Fay Wray plays a difficult role in a convincing manner, and the work of Nils Asther is also good. Edward Arnold and John Miljan are the best of a strong supporting cast. The many people who enjoyed “ I Was a Spy should not fail to see “ Madame Spy.” The supporting programme is varied and interesting. “ Sitting Pretty.” A distinguished cast gives a vivid interpretation to “ Sitting Pretty,” the bright musical film which comes to the Majestic Theatre on Monday. Produced on a lavish scale the picture has many beautiful ballets. The latest songs from both London and New Vo r k are featured, and the clever dancing by the 100 girls in the choruses makes some fine spectacles. Jack Oakie heads the cast, and he is 'supported by Jack Haley, Ginger Rogers, Thelma Todd and Lew Cody.
