Gathering at Sumner Council Offices. PHOTOGRAPH UNVEILED. A pleasant ceremony took place in the Sumner Borough Council meeting, room last evening when, for the pur- 1 pose of unveiling a photograph of* councillors who have occupied a seat! at the council table between May, 1923 j and May, 1933, an informal re union of j councillors was held. j The Mayor (Mr W. 11. Nicholson) expressed his great appreciation of the! presence of so many of Sumner’s excouncillors on a unique occasion. He thought that everyone would agree j that there could be no more sensible; method of perpetuating the memory of j councillors over a long period. At the invitation of the Mayor, Councillor 11. -E. Kennett drew aside the flag covering the photograph. The Mayor then proposed the health of “Ex-Councillors and Officers of the Borough” coupled with the names of Messrs Smithson, Jamieson and F. C. Cooper, To the other ex-councillors he extended the heartiest of best wishes. Mr G. W. C. Smithson referred tci his pleasure at being present. He related a number of anecdotes. Mr F. C. Cooper also expressed pleasure at the pleasant ceremony. He referred to Sumner’s excellent financial position and to the fact that Sumner “seemed to be able to raise money from nowhere.” Mr II C. Jamieson alsc spoke. Other toasts honoured were: “ Sumner,” proposed by Mr C. J Wilson and supported by Messrs W. Henley and B. J. Ager, and replied to (by the Deputy-Mayor, Mr 11. W. Harris: “The. Staff,” proposed by the Mavor and replied to by the Town Clerk, Mr J. F. Menzies, the engineer, Mr G. E. Harper, and gas and electrical engineer, Mr A. A. Cheshire; “ The Mayor,” proposed by Councillor T. E. Tait and replied to by Mr Nicholson; and “ The Ladies,” proposed by Mr J. 11. Thomas and responded to by Councillor C. Hart.
