FINANCES IMPROVE.
Report of Canterbury J.P.’s Association. A slight improvement in the finances of the Canterbury Justices of the Peace Association is revealed in the balance-sheet attached to the annual report, which will be submitted to the annual general meeting on Jufie 28. The excess of assets over liabilities is set down at £B4 2s lid. The report expresses regret that arrears of subscriptions are so high, but there is a decrease on last year’s figures. During the year, which began with a membership of 286. the association lost six members bv death and twelve by resignation and removal. It is stated that in nearly every instance, the newly-appointed Justices in the Canterbury district have responded to the invitation to become members of the association. The membership at the close of the vear was 282. The popularity of the members’ socials has been evidenced during the year bv the large gatherings of Justices and their wives and friends, states the report. On each occasion excellent musical programmes were rendered by well-known performers. The council of the association visited Paparua Prison during the year, and inspected the institution under the direction of the superintendent. The report states that Mr G. Maginness, vice-president, has been appointed an official visitor by the Prisons’ Board, and is closely in touch with the authorities. Members of the council also visited the Christchurch Gas Company’s works and were entertained by the chairman of directors (Mr F. E. Graham). Mr J. J. Hurley conducted the party over the works, and explained the various processes in the manufacture of the company’s products.
