Words and Phrases.

** T OQUAYI” writes: “A correspondent in Friday’s “ Star ” reTers to “ one phrase.” Is there any authority for using phrase in this sense? Mountain is frequently pronounced as mountayne both in prose and poetry. I have looked up many dict;onaries but cannot find any recognised authority that allows of the latter pronunciation. It must be local. The correspondent possibly refers to a misprint of phrase for phase, but “ Touchstone ” cannot trace it. Mountain is now almost universally pronounced with a short final syllable like ten or t’n, but in older days it certainly was pronounced tain. Such pronunciation nowadays is mere pedantry. TOUCHSTONE.
