News in Brief.

Taxi Drivers’ Duties. In a letter received at a meeting of the Auckland City Council, the Auckland Chamber cf Commerce called attention “ to the action of taxi-cab drivers in neglecting their proper duties of attending and conveying passengers from the steamer Monterey on her last visit,” and requesting that the council take some action to avoid such happenings in the future. The letter suggested that the only possible action by the council at present would be in the nature of a warning that licenses might be refused unless the duties and obligations under that license were properly carried out. The matter was referred to the legal and by-law's committee for a report. South Island-Melbourne Service. In the course of its annual report the Southland League makes - reference to the reinstatement of the South Island-Mel-bourne shipping service. “ Although the service is not starting as soon as we would like,” the report says, ” the acceleration of the first sailing will allow people to reach Melbourne in time for the Melbourne Cup and other functions at that time. One regrettable feature is the non-inclusion of Hobart as a port of call. This is a serious drawback for both Tasmania and the South Island, for it is felt there is much trade awaiting development, apart from the desirability of catering for travellers. There is no matter more important to the progress and development of southern New Zealand than the continuation of a regular passenger shipping service between the South Island ports and Australia. It Is desired that the conclusion of the Melbourne Centenary celebrations will not mean the end of the service, and this is one matter the league must keep to the forefront of its activities.”
