“TOO MUCH FRICTION.”

Wellington Council and City Work. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 15. A recommendation by the Works Committee that in future trench-dig-ging work ‘to be done in city streets by the council should be undertaken by corporation labourers was adopted by the City Council. The chairman of the committee (Mr Forsyth) explained that the main idea was to avoid the friction and bother which existed when partly relief and partly standard labour were employed. The Mayor (Mr T. C. A. Hislop) said that the council would have to employ more corporation labourers, but he considered that the best thing to do would be to pay relief workers engaged on council trench-digging at standard rates of wages. This proposal was not supported. The committee’s recommendation was adopted.
