DUTY ON TOBACCO.
Customs Department Alleges Non-payment. TWO YOUNG MEN CHARGED. An unusual charge was heard in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, when George Bilton Speak, of Nelson, 28 years of age, and Arthur Augustus Newth, 25, Ixith labourers, appeared before Mr H. A. Young, S.M., charged that on June 12. with intent to defraud the revenue of tl'e Customs Department, they were found in possession of 601 b of tobacco in respect of which no duty had been Mr Hutchison, who appeared for the accused, asked for a remand. The Collector of Customs, Mr Trownson. said that a search of the house where the accused were living disclosed 1201 b of New Zealand leaf and appliances for making it into prepared tobacco. ITe asked for a remand for 48 hours. Mr Hutchison said that that date would not suit him. It was stated, however, that the length of the remand was determined by the Act. and it was arranged that the accused should be formally remanded for 48 hours and then they could again be remanded if so required. On the application of counsel, bail was allowed each man in £SO and one surety of £SO.
