CHEMISTS TO PAY COSTS.
On a charge of selling liquid paraffin that did not conform with the prescribed standard, Cook and Ross, Ltd., chemists, of Colombo Street, were ordered by Mr H. A. Young, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day to pay costs.
The information was laid by the Health Department (Mr A. W. Brown). Mr Thomas appeared for defendants, and entered a plea of guilty. Mr Brown said that the charge was one under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act. Counsel added that defendants must have been guilty of some degree of negligence, but there was no suggestion of any fraud. Mr Thomas, for defendants, said that this particular grade of paraffin was very expensive, and was stocked by only three firms in the South Island. He was forced to plead guilty, as it had been agreed to Submit the sample to an independent analyst and abide by his decision. Other analysts had not been in agreement, and the whole matter was quite inexplicable. The defendants were convicted and ordered to pay 10s Court costs, 10s Sd Government analyst’s fee, £3 13s 6d private analyst’s fee. and £3 3s solicitor’s fee—a total of £7 17s.
