TILL ROBBED.
Grill Room Proprietor >, Catches Thief. SENTENCE OF IMPRISONMENT. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, June 9. Told by a customer late at night that a man was robbing his till, the proprietor of a Queen Street grill room dashed to the front of his premises and saw a man in the act of running away from the till. Without asking any questions the proprietor of the establishment knocked the man down and called the police. In the Police Court, before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., Rangi Aka, aged thirty, a labourer, was charged with stealing £9 in money, the property of James Rudolff Jurie. ' After hearing the evidence, Mr Noble, who appeared for accused, intimated that he would plead guilty. Sub-Inspector Edwards said that Mr Jurie was in the cooking room of his shop when he was told that a man was robbing his till. He ran to the front of the shop and arrived just as accused stood up from the till and started to run away. The proprietor immediately knocked the man down, and subsequently £9 was found in his possession. A check showed that £l3 9s had been registered and that there was only £3 9s left in the till, but, as only £9 had been found on accused, he was only charged with the theft of that amount. He appeared to have taken some liquor. Mr Noble said that accused had told him that a Dalmatian had tried to beat him for his change. The Magistrate: Yes, he would tell you that. Mr Noble: The Dalmatian got some of his own back. He knocked him out Aka was sent to gaol for six months.
