PESTERED GIRLS.
Man Convicted by S.M. at Hokitika. INCIDENT AFTER DANCE. (Special to the “ Star.”) HOKITIKA, May 25. John Edward Pedder, twenty-seven years of age, a grocer’s assistant, was fined £2 10s on each-, of two charges of assault on young women. The accused attended a dance and later, while under the influence of liquor, he forced his attention on a young woman, whom he saw to her home. He endeavoured to kiss her goorl-night, but she protested and called out to the occupants of the place where she resided. The accused departed, but returned later. He entered the building and forced his way into the room where the young woman and another girl w'ere. They tried to eject him from the room and called for assistance. The accused, in the meantime, departed. He had made a voluntary statement to the police and immediately apologised to the girls. The Magistrate, in imposing the fines, said that he had to protect respectable girls from the attention of men in liquor.
