RUGBY LEAGUE.
Relief Workers’ Request Worth Support. SEEKING NEW PLAYERS. The proposition suggested to the executive of the Canterbury Rugby League at its meeting on Monday night, that local clubs should assist the new Relief Workers’ Centre in its endeavours to find unemployed League players to take part in a mid-week competition, is considered by officials to be worthy of all the support it can find. It is stated that there must be many cf these plavers, unable to take part in regular club games, who would like an opportunity to play. Bright football should be seen in tomorrow’s games. The draw is as follows : Addington v. Svdenham, Svdenham Park. Ruru v. Ilcrnby, at Hornby. * Linwood v. New Brighton, Rawhiti Domain. The game at Sydenham Park should provide plenty of incident, and the home team, on Us improved showing last Saturday, should give Addington a good tussle. If anything, Sydenham are stronger in the backs, but Addington, with players such as C. Brim hie, J. Amos and E. Barbaiel, will make the pace hot. There should be no doubt about the results of the other two matches. Hornby and Linwood respectively are vastly superior to Burn Road and New Brighton. Ruru Road, incidentally, gave a disappointing display last Saturday, and did not maintain the improvement shown in earlier games. In connection with the Relief Workers’ Centre’s request to the League executive, it is considered that it might be a good thing for the code to adopt some form of insurance for its players. Mr R. F. Bennet. honorary secretary of the centre, pointed out that relief workers were anxious to play League, hut did not feel like taking the risk of playing without being covered by indie* “ Star ” offers to its readers, is an excellent way of overcoming the difficulty. The Auckland Rugby League can justly be proud of its new stand at Carlaw Park. Seating approximately 3500, the stand runs practically the whole length of the No. 1 ground, and is 24 S ft long. 48ft 6in deep and 2Sft high, sloping to 25ft at the front. An up-to-date sound-proof, glassed-in box is provided for broadcasting, and underneath the stand are firstclass changing quarters. management, referees’ and club rooms, and an ambulance and casualty Some of the displays seen in juniorgrade League matches this season have been decidedly inferior, the (younger players seeming to have no knowledge of tiie finer points of the code. Coaches would be well advised to teach their charges the elements of the game, and teach that possession is nine points of the game. They should do this, not only because well-played League is a fine game, but because these young Players will one day be wanted to fill places in senior teams. How will the code progress if these billets cannot efficiently be filled? J. Forbes, Sydenham’s clever first fiveeighth, will be “out” for the rest of the season, as a. result of the dislocated knee lie-received in the strenuous match with Hornby three weeks ago. T. Wellsmore, the Hornby winger, has* taken up track running, and the training he has received in this branch of sport has had a good effect on his footbail. He has shown a steady improve-* ment since the start of the season. W. Palamountain, on the other wing, seems to have found his logical position after playing centre for some time. Palamountain took C. Matson’s position, and J. Sheeliy, a former Union player, has gone to second five-eighth. With J > Howison as his partner. Hornby have an excellent back combination.
