RAILAGE ON STOCK.
Farmers’ Union to Seek Lower Rates. The rates charged by the Railway Department for the carriage of live stock were the subject of strong criticism by Mr David Jones, chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers Board, when speaking at a meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury branch of the Ne\v Zealand Farmers’ Union yesterday. Mr Jones, who had been invited to discuss a remit on the subject, referred to the executive from the provincial conference of the branch last week, described the efforts made by the Meat Board for the last two or three years to persuade the Railway Department to reduce the rates. Members then voted on the remit, which asks that the Railway Department be requested to reduce the freight rate on live stock, which is still 50 per cent above pre-war rates. The remit was carried, and it was decided to refer it to the Dominion conference of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union and the Railways Board.
