Ministerial. The Minister of Public Works (the Hon John Bitchener) passed through Christchurch this morning on his way to Fairlie. lie will return north on Tuesday. The Minister of Finance (the Right lion J. G. Coates) left Queenstown for Dunedin this morning. He is expected to pass through Christchurch to-morro* night. Mr H. G. Livingstone has returned to Christchurch from Napier. Mr W. Taylor left for Wellington by the Wahinc last evening. Mr R. A. Anderson (Invercargill) arrived from the north this morning. Mr E. C. Lane (Wellington) is staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr J. D. Hutchison left last evening for Wellington. He is expected to return to-morrow. Guests at the Royal Hotel include: Messrs L. Spencer and J. Cotton (Wellington) and S. Thornton (Dunedin). The death occurred at Wellington yesterday of Mr John Duff, manager of Kempthorne, Prosser and Co. Mr J. D. Hutchison left for Wellington last evening. He expects to return on Friday morning. Sir Cecil Leys returned to Christchurch la t evening after a brief visit to Dunedin. He is staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr C. W. Rattray, a director of the Union Steam Ship Company, passed through Christchurch last evening on his way north. Mr A. F. Wright, president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, left last evening for Rotorua. lie will return in about a week’s time. Mr J. Bertram, New Zealand Rhodes scholar, has been awarded the Charles Oldham scholarship, and is now studying at New College, Oxford. Guests at the New City Hotel include Messrs C. Moore and O. D. Sutcliffe (Wellington', D. B. Brown (Dunedin) and R. D. Preston (Invercargill). Messrs Colin Munro and F. G. Haycock (Wellington) and R. A. Anderson (Invercargill) are guests at the United Service Hotel. A motion of sympathy with Ladv Wigram in the death of Sir Henry Wigram was passed at the monthly meeting of the Wairewa County Council. Mr G. H. Mackley, general manager of railways will return to Christchurch from tlie West Coast to-morrow evening, in continuation of his tour of the South Island. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr W. G. Walden, was passed at the meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Centre last night. ATr C. W. Moore, a member of the Waimairi County Council, who has been ill for some time past, was welcomed back at the annual meeting of the council last night. Mr A. I. W. Wood, chairman of the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority, and Mr F. G. Ilall-Jones, chairman of the No. 10 Authority, passed through Christchurch last evening on their way to Wellington. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr J. A. Uren, a former councillor, was carried at the annual meeting of the Waimairi County Council last evening. Mr Uren represented the Papanui riding on the council from 1917 to 1920. Mr J. Rowley, formerly head master cf the Gisborne School and later of the West Christchurch District High School, is visiting Christchurch to attend the jubilee celebrations of the West Christchurch School. Mr G. S. Simpson, formerly proprietor of Warner’s Hotel. Christchurch, and of the Albion Hotel, Greymouth. has purchased the lease of the new Criterion Hotel. Napier, and has now taken over control of that establishment, states the “ Daily Telegraph. * Squadron-Leader J. L. Findlay, officer commanding the Wigram Aerodrome, fleur south this morning to interview applicants for positions on the ground , staff of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. lie will make Visits to Timaru, Waimate, Oamaru, Dunedin, Invercargill and Balclutha. Eulogistic references to the services of Mr J. Liggins. the retiring chairman of the Waimairi County Council, were made by councillors at the annual meeting of the council last evening. On the motion of Mr W. J. Walter, seconded by Mr W. P. Spencer, an appreciative minute was recorded by acclamation.
