Breach of Award.

PROTEST against the smallness of the fine imposed by a Magistrate in a case in which an employer was proceeded against for failing to pay award wages was made by a deputation representing the Wellington Trades and Labour Council which waited on the Minister of Justice (the Hon J. G. Cobbe) and the Minister of Labour (the Hon A. Hamilton). In the same case the employee was proceeded against for accepting less than award wages. Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., who heard the case, fined the employer 10s and costs and the employee 5s and costs. It was contended by the deputation that the fines were altogether too small in view of the seriousness of the case. Mr Cobbe said that he could not possibly interfere with the decision of the Magistrate. Both defendants pleaded guilty, and no evidence was offered. It was possible, if any evidence had been given, that the penalty would have been more severe.
