OBITUARY.

Death of Well-known Land Agent.

Many friends and business men will learn with regret of the death of Mr Joseph Wallace, J.P., a well-known member of the land agency profession, which took place at his residence, Gloucester Street, yesterday. Mr Wallace, who was in his seventy-third year, was born in London in 1861. After receiving private tuition in London he came to New Zealand in the s.s. Atrato, landing in Lyttelton on June 21, 1874. His education was completed at the East Christchurch School, and in 1876 he joined the staff of the Christchurch Press Company as an apprentice. In 1879 he obtained a position with Messrs Toosev Oliver and Company as a junior clerk. The following year he joined the London, Liverpool and Globe Insurance Society, but in 1881 returned to the Christchurch Press Company as cashier. After several changes he eventually established a land agency on his own account in 1910 and had carried on business up to the time of his death.

In 1913 Mr Wallace was appointed acting-Consular agent for Italy, and in 1916 Consular agent, occupying the position until his retirement in 1932. For some time he was secretary to the Banks Peninsula Rabbit Board, and in 1919 he was appointed secretary of the Banks Peninsula Racing Club. He resigned these positions some five months ago. Mr Wallace took an active interest in public affairs, being a member of the St John Ambulance Brigade, the Navy League and of the Canterbury Pilgrims’ Association. Keenly interested in bowling, Mr Wallace was a member of the Christchurch Bowling Club, and had acted in the position of honorary secretary. Other sporting bodies in which he took an interest were the Pioneer Sports Club, Midland Cricket Club, Canterbury Chess Club and the Union Rowing Club.

At one time he was a Past-Grand of the Loyal City of Christchurch Lodge, M.U.,1.0.0.F. He was in excellent health until last October, and it is said of him that he was a man who had not suffered a day’s illness throughout his lifetime. His wife died three years ago. lie is survived by two sons and one daughter.
