LARWOOD UNFIT.

English Selectors Want More Bowlers. DIFFICULT TO PICK TEAM. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received May 21, 10.35 am.) LONDON, May 20. The English cricket selectors are facing serious problems with the famine of bowlers and the over-produc-tion of batsmen. Their difficulties have been intensified by

the news that Larwood will be unfit to play, at least in the Fifth Test in consequence of a recurrence of his foot trouble. An unsatisfactory report about Hammond’s back injury, doubt regarding the fitness of Allen, and the obvious lack of form of Voce are also worrying them.

MATCH AT OXFORD. Another Australian Makes a Century. s LONDON, May 19. The weather was fine and the wicket was good when Australia, having won the toss, opened the first innings in the match with Oxford University at Oxford. When stumps were drawn the Australians had concluded their innings for 319, and two Varsity wickets had fallen for five runs.

The teams were'— Australia—W. H. Ponsford, W. A. Brown, D. G. Bradman, L. S. Darling, S. J. M'Cabe, E. H. Bromley, A. G. Chipperfield, W. A. Oldfield, C. V. Grimmett, H. I. Ebeling, L. O’B. Fleet-wood-Smith. Oxford University—D. F. Walker, D. C. FI. Townsend, F. C. De Sarm, N. S Mitchell-Innes, F. G. H. Chalk, R. G. Stainton, R. G. Tindall, E. A. Barlow, M. H. Matthews, A. P. Singleton and J. H. Dyson. Ponsford and Brown started nicely, both driving powerfully, until Townsend, coming on at 48, got Brown, who played over the ball which kept low. Bradman took time to settle down, but Ponsford scored freely. Four thousand spectators were present after lunch, when the weather was cold and threatening. Bradman, who had never been quite comfortable, badly mistimed a ball and was out leg before. In spite of the bowlers’ good length and the keen fielding, Darling again began in great style, quickly hitting four boundaries. Dyson had another success at ISI, when Ponsford attempted to cut a ball and was easily caught in the slips. He had batted for 145 minutes. He gave an attractive display, hitting seven fours. Darling dashingly reached 50 in forty-five minutes and the total of 200 was posted in 150 minutes. Darling completely overshadowed M’Cabe, who seemed to pull away from a fastish ball which he played on. Bromley was never happy and was clean bowled. Brilliantly Audacious.

Darling’s brilliantly audacious hundred, his first in England, took only ninety-five minutes. It included twenty fours. He was out in the same over. With Chipperfield and Oldfield together 300 was passed in 225 minutes. Tindall clean bowled Oldfield and Grimmett in the same over. Ebeling went out to a very poor shot. With the last man, Fleetwood-Smith, in Chipperfield hit out but when attempting a six was easily caught at mid-on. The innings, which is the smallest total of the tour, lasted 245 minutes. Oxford began at 5.30 p.m., the weather being bitterly cold, with slight rain. In the third over Ebeling shattered the wicket of the Cingalese, De Sarm. Rain stopped play at 5.45 p.m. Scores: AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
