The committee appointed to discuss the question of the Main South Road paving reported on the business done and the present position relative to that work. It was reported by Mr Leslie that he had promised the sum flx=*d as the county's share and all the other local bodies had agreed to pay a fixed sum, the Main Highways Board finding tne balance. The work would be put in hand almost immediatelv. The secretary of t :e Tai Tapu branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union wrote regarding the necessity of dealing with Californian thistles. It was stated that the question was really one for the noxious weeds inspector, to whom the matter was referred. The question of an additional light near Middleton was referred to Mr Prosser and the clerk for attention. The secretary of the New Zealand Poultry Club wrote asking that dogs kept solely for the protection of poultry should be registered at reduced rates. It was decided to reply that the council had no power to fix reduced charges for such dogs, but if the club would promote an amendment to the Dog Registration Act in the direction desired the council would support them. Mr F. Langbein wrote regarding the estimates for the year 19.14-85 in connection with main highways. The council went, into the question of possible work in the coming year and generally agreed to the work as outlined by the clerk. It was decided to again place a portion of the Bealey Road on tlie list, of roads that should be paved. The report on general work stated that teams were working on the Bealey Road, improving the side drainage and filling in a hollow near the Water Wheel farm. Part of this road was being metalled at the same time. Several water-races had been piped during the month. It was also reported that the contract for the Drain Road had been let during the month to the British Pavements Co., and that the company had already started to collect the plant on the road. Operations would start almost at once.
