Man Imprisoned for False Pretences. Albert Joseph Fogarty, a clerk, 37 vears of age, of Manchester Street, who pleaded guilty to a charge that on April 11, at Christchurch, he obtained £1 by falsely representing that he w’as employed by Hannah's boot warehouse, in Wellington, w’as sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, with hard lab-Chief-Detective Dunlop said that the accused had called at Hannah’s shop in Christchurch, asking to see the manager. He engaged the manager in conversation for a few minutes, saying that he was employed by the firm in Wellington. lie then went away, but returned in a short Line saying that he was in need of ii. The money was given to him, but it was found later that he had no connection with the firm whatever. Remanded. Cecil Arthur Hensley, a labourer, twenty-nine years of age, of Breezes Road, was charged that on May 2, 1904. at Christchurch, he stole £22 10s_ in money, a cheque to the value of £5 os and one for £l2 5s 3d, and a coat and vest valued at JOs, of a total value of £4O 10s 3d, the property of Edwin Russell. The chief-detective said that Hensley was arrested at seven o'clock this morning. The accused was remanded until May 15. Edward Hemsley Dawson, a slaughterman, of Brougham Street, aged thirtytwo years, was charged that on February 4 he stole a radio set, a gramophone motor, a .22 rifle and a bathing costume, of a value of £lO. the property of Reginald James Mitchell. He was remanded until May 15. John Carr (Mr Lyons), of John Street. Belfast, appeared on remand on a charge that on April 23, at Belfast, he assaulted Leo Blackburn Carr so as to cause actual bodily hatm. The police stated that they were not yet ready to proceed with the case, and. on their application, the accused was further remanded until May 15. Carr was allowed bail in the sum of £SO in his own recognisance. Arrested in Dunedin. Victor Frederick Melville, a cook, aged forty-seven years, was charged that on April 24 he recklessly drove ; motorcar on the Main South Road. He was remanded until May 15. The chief-detective said that accused had been arrested in Dunedin and had arrived in Christchurch only this morning. There would be four other charges against him in connection with false pretences, and also a -barge under the Motor Vehicles Act.
