The incongruity of the Bowter fountain playing in the rain in competition ■with the elements during the last few days was mentioned by the chairman of the Christchurch Beautifying Association (Mr R. B. Owen) at the meeting of the executive of the association last night. He said that during Carnival Week visitors had been dsappointed at not seeing the now-famous fountain playing, and yet the water from it splashed along the footpath during wet and stormy weather. At Mr Owen’s instigation the meeting decided to suggest to the City Council that the fountain be closed down during squally weather, and so permt of more playing during the summer months. Residents c*f Little River are considering making some tangible and official recognition of the work of Mr C. Williams, of the Post Office staff, for his services during the flood period. On the terrible Friday night Mr Williams staved at his post all night, working in several inches of water and giving valuable warnings to farmers whose homes were threatened. When he went off duty at 4.30 o’clock on Saturday afternoon he had finished a spell of twenty-three hours at his desk.
