Was Miss Molly Evans, a pretty twenty-year-old Irish girl, whose body was found on the foreshore of the Thames at Hammersmith ten days ago, murdered ? There is a strong belief that she was, and that several people who knew her well are holding back evidence. At the adjourned inquest on Miss Evans at Mortlake yesterday the coroner, Mr W. J. Lord, returned an open verdict, and observed: “ I am not at all satisfied that this girl committed suicide, ancj I am anxious that the police should follow this case up as thoroughly as possible.” Late last night the police were making inquiries in Chelsea, Wapping, and Liverpool, where they believe Miss Evans had associations. Mrs Jean Smith, of Richmond Gardens, Shepherd’s Bush. W., stated at the inquest yesterday that Miss Evans stayed at Richmond Gardens from March 5 to 12. She said she was looking for a rituation. Foreign Men Friends. On March 12 Miss Evans said she was going to Chelsea and had found a job. Mrs Smith said that Miss Evans also stated she had been in Liverpool living with a party of Austrians, one of whom had been a captain in the Austrian Army, and a Frenchman named Pierre. “ She told me Pierre was her young man, and said that the party got their livine as artists. ” She said that when she left Liverpool she did not tell her yoxmg man where she was going, otherwise he would have been after her. She said

she would let him know where she was when she got a job.” Questions which face the police now are: Who is the girl with whom Miss Evans stayed after she had left Richmond Gardens, and where is the office in Chelsea where she stated she had obtained work. The police also want to know what became of two suitcases which Miss Evans took from the address in Richmond Gardens, and why, when found, she was dressed in very old clothes. A short while previously she had bought a completely new outfit.
