LOSS ON PRODUCTION
Poor Patronage for “ Les Cloches.” FURTHER PERFORMANCES. What was intended to be the final presentation of the Christchurch Operatic Society’s production of “ Les Cloches de Corneville.” was given in St James’s Theatre on Saturday evening, but it has now been decided to give a matinee and concluding evening performance in the theatre next Saturday. Although the finances of the production have not been finally calculated, there is so far a loss of £2OO for the season, as the cost of the production amounted to about £7OO. Mr G. L. Donaldson, secretary of the society, said last evening that the audience on Saturday evening was big considering the bad weather, and the performance had received a flattering reception. The public support on the whole had been disappointing as, while the older people had seen the show and had liked it, the younger people had not turned up. At the end of Saturday’s presentation the chairman of the society (Mr G. M. Hall) made a brief speech. He thanked all who had given their help and said that the result had been a production that was one of the finest yet given by the members of the society and it was hard to understand the lack of support. He thought that when the members of the public realised what they had missed they would want to see the show, so that it would be put on again next Saturday.
