NATIVE LANDS.
Maoris More Contented by New Scheme. DEVELOPMENT ESSENTIAL. Per Press Association. W HANGAR El, May 5. The Native Affairs Commission concluded its sittings this morning and left for Rotorua. Robert Boyd Russell, manager for the Bay of Islands County Council, said that the Maoris were much moie contented since the inception of the native land scheme, which he considered \*>uld be a success in the north if supervision were rigid. There was room for an expenditure of £391,000 on j natives in the Hokianga, Bay of j Islands and Mangonui counties, and ample security. The development of native lands was essential for the progress of Europeans as well as the Maori. Mr John Alexander asked: You consider that the scheme would be a good thing from a national point of view in reviewing charitable aid and preserving unemployment funds?—Yes. Witness further said that the scheme had been more or less an insurance to other lands by combating to a large extent the menace of noxious weeds. The results achieved with limited supervision had been marvellous. The main objection was that the lands were non-ratepaying.
