JUBILEE SERVICES.

Greendale Methodist Church Celebrations.

Special services celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of the beginning of Methodist services in Greendale were held yesterday. Despite threatening weather the church was crowded for the services. The morning service was conducted by the Rev A. H. Fowles, of Lyttelton, an ex-minister of the circuit. lie referred to the habits of the old pioneers, which, he said, were still necessary in the church today, including Bible study, prayer, fellowship and service. They to-day had greater privileges than the pioneers, but the same spirit was necessary to fight the evils of the time. During the service Air E. Ridgen sang the sacred solo, “Open the Gates of the Temple.” At the afternoon service Mr Fowles said that a high standard of life had to be set by the followers of Jesus Christ to-day and as much enthusiasm for religious matters was needed as for political matters or sport. The Rev O. Burnet, of Kaiapoi, conducted the evening service and Mrs H. Moses, of Auckland, sang the sacred solo “O Divine Redeemer.” Miss B. F. Rudd was at the organ. A special feature of the services was the singing by the choir under the leadership of Mrs Moses. The “Te Deum,” “Praise My Soul the King of Heaven” and “Alleluia” were rendered as anthems. The services throughout the day were characterised by goo I congregational singing and a spirit of happy fellowship. The celebrations will be continued this afternoon when at two o’clock a special service of thanksgiving will be held. The Rev John Harris, of Woolston, will be the preacher. The old identities will be given an opportunity to meet during afternoon tea. At 5.30 p.m. the jubilee tea meeting wil ; take place in the Orange Hall to be followed by speeches, reminiscences, greetings and musical items.
