ASHBURTON NEWS.

Women’s Division of Farmers’ Union. ASHBURTON, May 6. At the annual meeting of the MidCanterbury executive of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union on Friday the president, Mrs Fleming, reported that the financial position was very satisfactory. The housekeeping secretary (Mrs E. M. Begg) reported that sixteen housekeepers had been out during the past twelve months. She reminded members that it was their duty to notify necessitous cases in connection with the housekeping scheme. It was reported that branches had been formed at Rokeby and Winchmore. The following officers were elected:— President, Mrs F. Johnson; president emeritus, Mrs J. Fleming; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames H. Dillon and W. Penny; secretary. Mrs C. Rickard; treasurer, Mrs E. M. Begg; committee, Mesdames J. Jacob, F. Scott and R. J. Martin. Lodge Meeting. At the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Ashburton Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., the N.G. (Brother A. A. Craighead) presided. Sick pay amounting to £lB 10s was passed in favour of sixteen members. Three new members were elected, two initiated and two proposals for membership were received. Notification was received thai two members had taken the white degree at Rakaia. The official visit to the lodge by district officers will take place next lodge night, May 17. The first nominations for officers for the ensuing term were received. Two members were admitted to the gold degree by the lecture master (P.G. Brother J. H. Stevens). Junior Women’s Institute. The junior group of the Ashburton Women’s Institute met recently, the president (Miss I. Collison) being in the chair. An interesting demonstration on egg-shell work was given by Mrs Pitts, who also judged the competition for the best article made from an undyed flour bag. The results were: Miss F. Hardy 1, Miss M. Willers 2, Miss D.' Breeze 3. A vocal solo was given by Miss W. Bruce. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Pitts for her demonstration and for judging the competition. Personal. Mr H. A. Vezey, who was assistantengineer to the Ashburton County Council for several years and who has been acting-engineer since Air A. A. Fooks retired from the position last year, has been appointed engineer to the council.
