VOLUNTEER BRIGADE.

Smoke Concert Held at Brighton. The New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade held its annual smoke concert in the brigade social room on Saturday evening. Superintendent W. HStokes presiding. There was a large attendance and visitors were present from the Lyttelton, Sumner, Ashburton and Christchurch Brigades anl the R.S.A. The New Brighton Borough Council was represented by the DeputyMayor (Councillor A. E. Lawry) and Councillor W. Hulme. chairman of the Fire Prevention Committee. The guests were formally welcomed by the chairman. The toasts of the evening were the Borough Council, proposed by Superintendent Stokes and responded to by Councillors Lawry and Hulme; the Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades Association, proposed by Foreman R. Malden (Lyttelton) and responded to by Deput v-Superintendent J. F. Stokes; the R.S.A.. proposed by Engineer Fitch ett and responded to by Mr G. Marsn (president of the R.S.A.) and Mr E. Ransle.v; the . Visitors. proposed by Foreman W. Whitely and responded to by Foreman H. Efford (Ashburton): the Artists, proposed by the secretary (Mr W. Barclay). Items were contributed by Messrs E. P. O’Connell (accordeon solo), J. Falconer (recitation), C. James (song), A. C. Woolcott (recitation) and N. Carson (ukelele novelty).!
