THE SOCIAL ROUND.

Gatherings Held in Town and Country. HORNBY FOOTBALL CLUB. The ball to open the activities of the Hornby Rugby League Football Club for this season was held in the Orange Hall, Hornby, on Wednesday evening, when some 100 players and friends were in attendance. The dance hall had been specially decorated for the occasion with foliage, black and white streamers and balloons, and the arrangements and the music by Fred Whitelaw's Dance Orchestra left nothing to be desired. A Monte Carlo waltz and other novelty dances added to the enjoyment of the evening, the winners of the Monte Carlo being Mr and Mrs H. D. Moran. The lucky spot dance was won by Mi and Mrs W. Woodgate, and the prizes for the first couple on the floor by Miss Irene M Carry and Mr Roy Bell. Extra musical numbers were played by Miss Ngarita Kenworthy, and tho duties of M. were jointly carried out by Messrs J. Pearce and J. Stuart, jun. The committee responsible for the success of the function was Messrs M. Standeven, James Airey W. Vivian, Jack Airey, E. Freeman, J. M’Carthy, F. Slade, F. M'Kenzie, W. Palamountain, J. Pearce, James Stuart (secretary). Those in charge of the catering arrangements were Mrs M’Kenzie, Miss Irene M’Garry and Miss Thelma M’Garry. Among those present were: Mesdames Hampton, R. Lawrence. Kenworthy, C. Kenworthy, R. Fahey, C. M’Garry. Party at Prebbleton. A number of Indies arranged a gift party in the Prebbleton Parish Hall on Tuesday evening in honour of Mr and Mrs V. Arps, who were recently married. There was a large attendance of friends, each of whom brought a useful gift for Mr and Mrs Arps’s new home. During the evening a pianoforte solo was plaved by Miss Edith BennetA, duets were sung by Misses Bertha Hartnell and Poppy Hammond, Misses Mildred Easterbrook and Aileen Gallagher. a recitation was given by Miss Neroli Atkinson, and potted plays by Mesdames Atkinson, Carter and Prebble. Community singing, games and dancing were also enjoyed, the music for the dancing being supplied by Mrs K. Hammond, Misses Poppy Hammond and Joyce Kolkman and Mr G. Rutherford. A euchre tournament and dance w’as held in St Ann’s school-room, Woolston, on Wednesday evening in aid of parish funds. The prizewinners were Miss Bolt and Mr T. O’Brien. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs J. Gilmore and a lucky spot one-step was won by Miss O. Price and Mr G. Hall Bamfield's Orchestra supplied the music and Mr A. Lanyon was M.C.
