After the sale 23s 3d was offered. Buyers for 'laupiris advanced their offers to 15s bd while holders asked His. Bank and insurance shares, as well as Government stocks, were ail in demand at late rates. The mining section was again active, and buyers raised their offers for Talismans to 13s. Wright has received the following cabled report on the Colombo tea auction of May I:—At yesterday’s auction of 2,310,0001 b. common teas were firm to dearer, while all other grades advanced two to three cents. There are 2,610,0001 b catalogued for the sale next week. LONDON MEAT PRICES. The Bank of Australasia has received the following cable, dated May 2, from London: —” New Zealand lambs: Hardening tendency for light-weights, but heavy-weights rather weaker; demand good, values likely to remain steady for some time, especially for light-weights. New’ Zealand mutton: In moderate demand. prices weaker; do not anticipate any material change in the near future. New Zealand beef: Demand good, prices firmer; prospects favourable.” MAORI GULLY DREDGE. The contractor for the Maori Gully dredge advises that a start has been made with the erection of huts for the men, and the dredge site is being cleared of scrub. A considerable quantity of timber for the pontoons lias already been delivered on the site. No time is being lost in work preparatory to commencement of building pontoons. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS.
