SCHOOLS BREAK UP.

Holidays Last Until May 22. Many thousands of school children, their high spirits not at all dashed by the weather, were unleashed to-day when all the primary schools and most of the secondary schools broke up for the May holidays. Some primary schools, on account of the rain, broke up in the course of the morning. A number of school committees were given discretionary powers as to when schools should break up, as it was considered that adjustments might be necessary in view of the measles epidemic. This has not resulted in any departure from the usual routine as far as Christchurch primary schools are concerned, but a few schools in the country broke up earlier. Secondary schools which broke up to-day were:—Boys’ High School, St Andrew’s College, Technics College and the Avonside Girls’ High School. Christ’s College broke up last night and St Bede’s on Wednesday. In an endeavour to stamp out all traces of measles, the Girls’ High School closed down a week ago and pupils will enjoy an extended holiday. The new term for primary schools will open on May 22, and for secondary schools on May 21, with the exception of St Andrew’s College, which will reopen on May 29.
