MORE THAN EXPECTED.

Fruit Export Season in Canterbury. "The indications are that 30,000 cases of apples and pears will be exported from Canterbury this season,” said Mr B. G. Goodwin, of the Depart ment of Agriculture, yesterday. Mr Goodwin pointed out that at first it was thought that the exports would consist of 15,000 cases only, nut already 22,000 cases had been shipped from Lyttelton, and the total shipments would no doubt reach the 30,0;j0 mark. Three factors had operated against a heavy export season this year—hail, frosts and the low prices of last season making growers reluctant to ship supplies overseas. Up to the present, however, the prices had been fairly good, and there were prospects of growers obtaining fairly payable prices throughout the season. The first supplies of Cox’s Orange apples to reach the Home market had made from 22s 6d to 35s a case, but, of course, the prices could not possibly maintain that level Recent quotations were:—Cox’s Orange 8s to 14s; Delicious 8s to 17s; Jonathan, Dunn’s Favourite and Ballarat 8s to 10s; Cleopatra 9s to 10s; and London Pippin and Lcrd Wolseley Ss to 9s. Pears had been realising fairly good prices also, and recent quotations were:—Winter Cole 10s to 13s 6d. Beurre Clairgeau 13s 6d; Conference 13s; Marie Louise 12s; and Vicar of Winkfield 7s to Bs. The export season will close on May 12.
