FINE ENTERTAINMENT.
Competitions Festival Starts Saturday. Apart altogether from the educational value of the forthcoming festival of the Christchurch Competitions Society is the outstanding fact that thtese Competitions provide bright entertainment. This is the twenty-fourth annual festival of the society. During an active lifetime the Competitions have led to the discovery of much real talent, and have paved the way for many individual successes in elocution and musical circles. One of the principals in the splendid comic opera now being staged in the city made, her initial appearance in the Competitions, and the preparation for each succeeding festival had much to do with the development of her undoubted artistry. This year the entries are almost equal to the highest figures yet recorded, and are over two hundred in excess of last year’s. Christchurch people appreciate the work the society is doing, in bringing together some of the best Canterbury talent to compete against the best from other provinces, and there is little doubt that the 1934 series will be a successful one. The festival starts in the Civic Theatre on Saturday night.
