Fernie, general manage, of Calder Mackay Co , leaves for Wellington to-night. Mr A. R. Smith, of the Christchurch Telegraph Office, has been appointed to succeed Mr J. S. Kane, C.M.G., Clerk of j Parliaments, returned to Wellington by the Monowai on Monday after a holi j day visit to Australia. Mr W. Mr J. A. Mackay (Wellington) is registered at the Clarendon Hotel. Guests at Warner's Hotel include Messrs F. Keely and C. Eskell (Wellington). Messrs P. W. Campbell and P H. N. Freeth were elected new members of the Economic Society at the annual general meeting last evening. Resignations were accepted from Messrs J. 11. Hall and F. E. O’Flynn. Mr B Shiel. who was formerly aviation officer in New Zealand for the Vacuum Oil Company, has been appointed chief aviation officer in Aus* j tralia during the absence of Mr F W. j Haig, who is making a world tour to i secure the latest information upon J modern developments in aviation. The Rev Dom Moreno, a member of the Benedictine Monastery at New Norcia. Western Australia, a foremost authority in Australia on church music, a brilliant organist and distinguished composer, arrived at Auckland by the Aorangi on Monday. Dom Moreno, who is a Spaniard, has come to New Zealand at the invitation of Bishop Liston to help the church choirs of Auckland and its suburbs in an advisory capacity. • The announcement was made last 'night by the Prime Minister (Mr Forbes) that Mr H. L. Wise. District j Officer of the Department of Industries and Commerce at Wellington, had been j appointed to the secretariat of the Royal Commission to investigate the j dairy industry. Mr Wise recently j acted as a member of the special Committee set up by the Government to inquire into the auestion of New Zea- ! land coinage and currency. Mr R. B. Tennent, Fields Superintendent of the Department of Agriculture for Otago and Southland, has been appointed Director of the Fields Division in succession to Mr J. W. Deem, who has retired oi. superannuation. Mr Tennent has been in charge of the Fields Division in Otago and Southland for several years. He came to Dunedin fourteen years ago after special courses of study in Scotland, wfich followed thirteen years in the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture.
