CROSS-BAR BROKEN.
Unusual Incident During Rugby Game. An unusual incident occurred during the third grade Rugby football match between Riccarton and High School, i at the Riccarton Domain last Saturday, j a shot at goal landing on one of the j ' cross-bars and snapping it. Several High School players were grouped'!, underneath the goal posts at the time, j • but fortunately no one was hit by the < ’ falling spar. The players desired to continue the match without, a cross-bar being on the uprights at one end, but the referee, Mr R. T. Bailey, would not allow the game to proceed until a rope bad been hoisted in place of the broken spar. The game was delayed for a brief period only. It appears that the goal posts had been left standing throughout the summer months, and that the cross-bar had become rotted. Commenting on the incident this morning, Mr Bailey stated that goal posts not taken down at the end of each football season should be inspected before being used the following year.
