BOY KILLED.

Bicycle Collided with Pony and Trap. INQUEST AT ASHBURTON. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, May 3. An inquest was opened in the Ashburton Courthouse to-day, before Mr R. Clark. District Coroner, in connection with the death at Mayfield of a boy named Robert John Mably, eleven years of age, who died in the Ashburton Hospital yesterday morning as a result of internal injuries. Ivan James Nicholson, aged twelve years, said that he was riding a bicycle with Mably sitting on the bar. They went from Burgess's garage towards the Post Office. He was on the left side of the road and crossed over to his right at the Post Office when he suddenly remembered that he had previously collected the mail and turned to the left side again. In doing so he was looking back at another boy standing at the Post Office. He heard a shout and on turning round saw Jack Riley’s pony and trap about two or three yards away. He ran into the pony, striking it on the left shoulder. Both he and Mably fell off the bicycle. Mably did not say anything about being hurt at the time. Douglas Bull, eleven years of age, an eye-witness, and John Turton Riley, a schoolboy, who was driving the gig, corroborated the evidence of the previous witness. The inquest was adjourned to hear the evidence of the medical superintendent of the Ashburtojn County Hospital.
