The Upper Riccarton Village Methodist Ladies’ Guild held an enjoyable afternoon in the guild room on Thursday. Mrs H. Ryan presided over a good attendance of members, and Miss Milly Exton read a brief report of the last meeting. Games were afterwards enjoyed, the winners of the croquet tournament being Mesdames H. Ryan and H. Taylor (equal). Mrs R. Bowman won the treasure hunt. Mesdames A. Boon and W. Lang were in charge of a home dainty stall to aid the guild’s presentation fund. The camera was not an invention in the same sense as the phonograph; it was really a development from the camera obscura, in which the first photographs were taken. Daguerre, the Frenchman, made a camera some time before 1839.
“ In a trice ” was originally a nautical term, meaning “at one pull”; its earlier form was “at one trice.” The noun “ trice ” was derived from the verb “trice” (as in “to trice up”), which was adapted from the Dutch “trisen” (to hoist).
