PRIZES FOR GARDENS.
Winners Congratulated on Merit. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes presented the prizes won in the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s garden competitions at a meeting in the Canterbury Automoblie Association’s rooms last evening. In congratulating the prize winners Sir Heaton said that it was the efforts of the Horticultural Society in promoting the competitions which enabled Christchurch to keep up its reputation as the “garden city.” The speaker added that some of the prize winners in the B and C classes had passed the credit on to their gardeners, but he was of the opinion that a sympathetic employer was a great encouragement to a gardener. Prizes were presented as follows: HOME GARDENS. Class A, Mr R. E. M’Dougall’s challenge trophy and miniature cup—Mrs J. Poster. Class B, Mason, Struthers. Ltd.’s cup and Royal Horticultural Society’s bronze medal—Air H. E. Otley. Class C, “Sun” challenge rose bowl and miniature cup—Mr A. W. Hadfield. City grocers’ trophies for second places.—Class A—Air A. Newton. Class B—Mr W. Williamson. Class C—Mr R. E. M’Dougall. HILL GARDENS. Class A, Professor Macmilan Brown’s challenge trophy—Mrs Lindsay Russell. Certificate of merit for second place—Mr G. H. Wood. Class B, Mr Lindsay Russell’s challenge rose bowl—Mr C. Ogilvie. Certificate of merit for second place—Air T. B. Boulton. ROCK GARDENS. Mr AI. P. Barnett’s challenge cup— Mr H. AI’D. Vincent. Certificate of merit for second place—Mrs G. Fraser. FACTORY GARDENS. Morse Challenge Cup for most outstanding exhibit at the gladiolus and dahlia show—Mr C. H. Aloir, for his gladioli. Royal Horticultural Society’s Banksian medal—Mrs G. fodil; Mr B. Penlington for seedling Barrii daffodil. Questions concerning the judging of gardens were discussed by the meeting. Mr Hart moved that points be given in the garden competition for glasshouses, but the motion was lost. It was decided to have a special competition lor glasshouses. Mr fl. L. Darton said that he would donate a trophy for tile section. Mr H. E. Otley’s motion that only one judging be made in the competition was defeated.
