PRIZES FOR GARDENS.

Winners Congratulated on Merit. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes presented the prizes won in the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s garden competitions at a meeting in the Canterbury Automoblie Association’s rooms last evening. In congratulating the prize winners Sir Heaton said that it was the efforts of the Horticultural Society in promoting the competitions which enabled Christchurch to keep up its reputation as the “garden city.” The speaker added that some of the prize winners in the B and C classes had passed the credit on to their gardeners, but he was of the opinion that a sympathetic employer was a great encouragement to a gardener. fodil; Mr B. Penlington for seedling Barrii daffodil. Questions concerning the judging of gardens were discussed by the meeting. Mr Hart moved that points be given in the garden competition for glasshouses, but the motion was lost. It was decided to have a special competition lor glasshouses. Mr fl. L. Darton said that he would donate a trophy for tile section. Mr H. E. Otley’s motion that only one judging be made in the competition was defeated.
