WAITAKI BOUND FOR N.Z.
Maiden Voyage of Union Steamer. The Union Steam Ship Company has received advice that its new cargo steamer Waitaki left Great Britain at 6 p.m. on Tuesday on her maiden trip to New Zealand. She is in command of Captain A. S. Dalgliesh, and is proceeding via the Suez Canal. She will probably arrive in the Dominion early in June. The Waitaki was ordered last year by the Union Company from Messrs Alexander Stephen and Sons, Ltd., Linthouse, and }yas launched on March 14. She has since been completed, and has run her trials. The ship will be a notable addition to the Union Company’s fleet. She is the first coastal carpr> ship built for the company since the Kini, Wainui and Waimarino were constructed in 1930. The Waitaki is of a similar type to the Wainui, but is larger and faster. The Waitaki’s gross tonnage is approximately 2260 compared with the Wainui’s 1633. When the Waftaki arrives in New Zealand she will replace the Wainui, which is now running in the trade between Melbourne, Bluff, Dunedin. Lyttelton and Wellington. Her port of registry will be Dunedin.
