EARTHQUAKE DANGERS.
Need for Proper Building Regulations. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 27. “It cannot be too strongly emphasised that earthquakes are natural phenomena that tave occurred in New Zealand on many occasions in the past, and will certainly recur from time to time,” said Dr J. Henderson, Director of Geological Survey, in his presidential address delivered at the annual meeting of the Wellington Philosophical Society. “ Though some parts of New Zealand seem to be more liable to destructive earthquakes than others, it is unlikely that any region is altogether exempt. “ New Zealanders must adapt themselves to this environment,” said Dr Henderson, “ and the most obvious way to mitigate the damage that future earthquakes will do as the land becomes more closely populated, is to adopt reasonable building regulations and see that they are carried into effect.”
