EVENING RECEPTION.
Delegates to Conference Entertained. PARTY AT. WOMEN'S CLUB As a pleasant relaxation from their arduous work during the week, the delegates to the National Council of Women, were the guests of the Canterbury Women’s Club at a reception held in the club rooms last evening. Pink geraniums, roses and autumn foliage were used with charming effect in the reception room, and for the first of the three plays presented, the stage was realistically decorated to represent a wooded swamp. Mrs R. T. Tosswill president of the club, in welcoming the guests expressed pleasure at being granted the opportunity of entertaining delegates to such an important conference, whirl} brought women from all parts of the Dominion. She could not be too generous in her praise and appreciation of those who gave so much time and energy for the betterment of women. The application of the Golden Rule was the kernel of the work which was worthy of the support of everyone. She expressed the hope that after so many busy days the guests would benefit by the evening’s entertainment. Miss P. E. Carnachan, president of the National Council of Women, who was presented with a spray of flowers, said that after the sentence of ‘‘a week s hard labour,” they were delighted to have some relaxation. She thanked the club for the kind thought which prompted the gathering and expressed the hope that more women would become interested in the work done by the National Council. If the conference in Christchurch had had no other result than that of arousing interest in the local National Council, the hours had been well spent. Three Plays Presented. Three plays were presented for the entertainment of the guests. They “ Pawns,” by Pereival Wilde: Grigor, a Russian peasant. Miss E. Bruce; Stepan, his elder son, Mrs M. M’beod; Ilia, his younger son, Mrs E. C. Gough; Michael, a peasant farmer, Mrs Rapps; Peter, his farm hand, Miss E. bockwood; a Russian sergeant, Mrs 11. Wyatt. ‘A Lady of Dreams,” by Pereival Wilde: Mary, Margaret Whet ter; Mary. Corrie M’Larcn: the memory of .Tones, Ellen Jones; the memory of Smith. Elizabeth Blgickham. “ Widows,” by Henry Swears: Mrs Smith, Flora M. Orchard; Mrs Pink, May Maginness; Mrs Yobb, Alice I. Fre’eTlie following items were also given:—Song group, Miss Annas Gale; instrumental trio, Miss Dora Deal, Miss Bessie Pollard, Miss Margaret Chapman; song group, Mrs Bingham Puddey. A vote of thanks was passed to the Women’s Club by Mrs W. G. Roberts, president of the Canterbury branch of the National Council of Women. A dainty supper was served.
