Mr Justice Kennedy arrived from the north this morning. Major-General Sir A. Russell was an arrival by the Rangatira this morning. The Hon J. G. Smith returned from Wellington to-day. Mr D. A. Adams arrived from the north this morning. Mr C. E. Brooks, who has been branch manager in Christchurch for C. C. Wakefield and Co., Ltd., for six years, will leave for England shortly. Messrs K C. Campbell, J. Morton (Auckland), D. Fraser (Dannevirke) and R. Arlow (Wellington) are registered at the United Service Hotel. Sub-Inspector G. B. Edwards, who has been transferred to Auckland, left last evening for the north by the Wahine. Messrs J. Brown (Sydney), R. Wainhouse, C. G. Carden and L. Mandeno (Auckland), E. R. Uhrban (Palmerston North) and T. A. Mead (Blenheim) are guests at the New City Hotel. A motion of appreciation of the work done by the vice-chairman, Mr A. R. Galbraith, was passed at last night’s meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Town Planning Institute. Mr B. E H. Whitcombe was elected president of the Associated Booksellers of New Zealand at the annual conference held in Wellington yesterday. The work of Mr S. G. Barnett, as secretary of the Arthur’s Pass National Park Board, was referred to at the annual meeting yesterday, and it was decided to place the board’s appreciation on record. Mr G. G. Lockwood was elected a member of the executive of the Arthur’s Pass National Park Board, at the annual meeting of the board yesterday. in place of the late Sir Arthur Dudley Dobson. Professor Arnold Wall yesterday tendered his resignation as a member of the Arthur’s Pass National Park Board, stating that he was leaving Christchurch to reside in Auckland. The resignation was accepted with regret, his services being placed on record. Mr J. W. Beanland and Mrs Beanland will leave for Wellington to-night to join the Monowai for Sydney. They will spend a week in that city and on their way to Melbourne they will visit Canberra. Mr Beanland will join the Orient liner Ormonde at Melbourne on May 29 for England, Mrs Beanland remaining in Victoria for five months. A motion of sympathy with tl-e relatives of the late Mr R. S. Pearson was passed by the North Canterbury Centre of the Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Union last evening. The president, Mr W. J. Walter, said that Mr Pearson, for a number of years, was the delegate of the Doyleston Club and a former president. It was reported to the meeting of the St John Ambulance Association last evening that Captain G. Peek, District Superintendent of the Brigade, had resigned. The chairman (Dr J. R. Thcmas) referred to the great amount of work that Captain Peek had done for both the brigade and the association. A vote of thanks was passed to him for his endeavours. Mr I. D. A. M’Donald, head attendant at Sunnyside Mental Hospital, has been transferred to the Nelson Mental Hospital as head attendant. Mr M’Donald, who has been twenty years on the staff at Sunnyside, was entertained yesterday by the officers and staff. Dr A. C. M’Killop, medical superintendent, presented Mr M’Donald with a canteen of cutlery, which had been subscribed for by the whole staff of the institution. Mr W. J. Thomas, chief clerk, and Mr 11. Hughes, who will succeed Mr M’Donald, paid high tributes to Mr M’Donald.
